Summerhill College Conditions of I.T. Use Policy

Summerhill College have pursued both the making of modern technology and access to modern learning opportunities available to Staff and Students and have the Internet service available to students to access during their designated classes and at the discretion of the I.T. Teacher.

With this access to the World Wide Web comes a great responsibility for both the teacher and the Students alike to behave and conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner and it is for that reason that these conditions of Computer and Internet use have been drawn up.


Proper and Ethical Use:

With this new learning tool, all students and staff must practice proper and ethical use. All students must read and agree with these procedures regarding ethics and security when using the Computers and the Internet in Summerhill College before students can access the computers and Internet in the I.T. room.

It is incumbent upon each teacher and student using the Internet to behave responsibility in this regard and management of Internet activity is clearly the responsibility of the individual I.T. teachers.


Computer & Internet Acceptable Use:

· The use of the computers and the Internet is a privilege not a right. Inappropriate use, including and violation of these conditions will result in cancellation of that privilege,
· The teacher, under this agreement, is delegated the authority to determine appropriate use and may deny computer and/or internet time based on inappropriate use by the Students.
· The teacher reserves the right to review any material on screen, in material storage devices used or in system folders to make determinations on whether specific uses of the network are inappropriate. In reviewing and monitoring user accounts and fileserver space, the school will respect the privacy of user accounts.
· All users, including adults, are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include, but are not limited to the following:

> Be polite, do not get abusive in your messages to other users,
> Use appropriate language, do not swear, use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language,
> Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services may not be used for any activity that contravenes the laws of Ireland or any other applicable jurisdiction.
> Do not reveal your personnel address or phone numbers of students or colleagues,
> Do not use the network in such a way that would disrupt the use of the network of other users.
> All communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed to be private property.
> Users may not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to engage in activities that compromise the privacy of others.
> Users should not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to engage in activities that waste Summerhill Colleges’ resources (people, networks, computers and finance)
> Users may not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to create, host or transmit offensive or obscene material, or engage in activities that would cause offence to others on the grounds of race, creed or sex.
> Users may not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to create, host or transmit material that is designed to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to others.
> Users may not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to create, host or transmit material that is defamatory.
> Users may not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to engage in activities that infringe the property rights to software.
> Users may not use Summerhill Colleges’ I.T. services to engage in activities that would destroy the integrity of computer-based information.


PENALTIES FOR IMPROPER USE:

Any user violating these rules, EU laws or posted classroom rules are subject to loss of network privileges. Disciplinary action and where appropriate legal action will be taken.

I understand that Internet access is intended for educational purposes. I also understand that every reasonable precaution has been taken by the school to provide for online safety but the school cannot be held responsible if pupils access unsuitable websites.
