Summerhill College Notes
Summerhill Science Success
Summerhill College teams scooped First and Second positions in the regional finals of the Irish Science Teachers’ Association senior quiz. The Leaving Cert team, which comprised of Cian Tuohy, Shane Mc Veigh and James Donnellan took first place with a really impressive display. In second position came another Summerhill team featuring Fourth Year students Eoin Lawless, Rian Kilfeather and Thomas Endersby.
An indication of the standard of the college teams was that the third placed team, which was composed of Leaving Certificate students, was a full six points behind Summerhill’s second team. Congratulations to the boys involved and to their coach, Mr. John Mc Getrick. The teams will compete in the All-Ireland finals in Trinity College Dublin.
November Masses
November masses for deceased relatives of the Summerhill community took place on a year by year basis in the college chapel from November 15th to November 19th. Rev Gerard Cryan celebrated all the masses and he was joined by Bishop Christy Jones for the Leaving Cert. mass on Friday November 19th.
College Chaplain, Mr Paul Keogh and his colleagues in the Religious Education department have organised a series of retreats for Third Year students. The retreats will be held in Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo.
Sports Fundraising
Summerhill College Sports received a welcome boost towards the end of November when Tesco Sligo permitted the boys to do some bag packing in the supermarket. Once again Mr Tuohy is appealing to students to bring in Tesco tokens. This year it is hoped to collect 10,000 tokens in order to take possession of a table tennis table. Old mobile phones and printer cartridges also help reach the target.
Decision Time for Leaving Certs
Summerhill College students recently attended the Further Education Exhibition,( organised by Institute of Guidance Counsellors Sligo Branch) in the Clarion Hotel.
Students had an opportunity to meet representatives of Irish Universities, ITs , Northern Ireland and Scottish Universities, An Garda Siochana and other further Training agencies to research further education An Information Night for parents, covering CAO and UCAS application process was held on Wed November17th Third Year students sat their D.A.T.S. (Aptitude Tests) recently. Guidance Counsellors Ms. Teresa Kelly and Mr. David Mc Neive administered the tests.
Sport
Summerhill College’s senior soccer team emerged victorious on a score line of two goals to one against Kiltimagh. Hero on the day was Steven Cawley who netted both goals. On foot of this victory Summerhill qualified for the knock out stages of the Connacht School’s competition.
M.S Readathon
Congratulations to First Year class, St. Andrews on raising €1345 in the Multiple Sclerosis sponsored Readathon. The MS READaTHON is a sponsored read for young people.
Run mainly through schools, the MS READaTHON encourages young people to read while raising much needed funds for services to those living with Multiple Sclerosis.
Strictly Come Dancing
Congratulations to Summerhill teacher, Mr Barry Convey and his dancing partner on winning the Strictly Come Dancing competition held in Gurteen last weekend. The event was a fund raising venture for Suicide Prevention.
Mr. Convey is well known in boxing circles but his dancing skills were less well known. Mr Convey is optimistic that he has manage to raise significant funds for the deserving charity. Coincidentally the runner up position in the competition was taken by Summerhill Substitute Teacher, Ms. Aoife Wynne and her dancing partner. Congratulations to both teachers.
Talk on Law
Highly respected and popular local garda, Pat Conway was guest of Ms. Rosemary Rogers Third Year C.S.P.E. class recently. Garda Conway, who is a regular visitor to the college spoke at length to the boys from Class 3L4 about the law generally but with special reference to the law as it can relate to young people. The class is studing The Law as part of their C.S.P.E. course.
Parent /Teacher Meeting
A Parent/Teacher meeting for the parents of Second Year students took place on Thursday November 25th.
A very large crowd attended the meeting which was held in Father Flanagan
