Champion in the Classroom

Appointments
Over the summer months the Summerhill board of management made permanent appointments to the positions of Principal and Deputy Principal.

Mr. Tommy Mc Manus was appointed principal and
Ms. Margaret Dowd was appointed Deputy-principal.

The two had been operating in an acting capacity in the respective positions for most of the last school year. The two appointments have proved very popular with both staff and students.


Exam Results
Summerhill College is especially proud of the performance of the Class of 2010 in this year's Leaving Certificate examinations. Candidates of all abilities returned results that were really impressive. Grabbing the limelight this year was Cian Henry.

who secured a maximum six hundred points, with some A grades to spare. An impressive number of candidates scored over five hundred points, with most students, being thrilled with their performance.

Principal, Mr. Tommy Mc Manus hailed the results as being some of the best on record. He congratulated the students on their performance and paid tribute to the hard work of the teachers involved.


We welcome all the students back to school and we particularly welcome our bumper crop of First Years, who are settling in well in their new environment. They enjoyed the first retreats of the school year took place in Ballintubber Abbey on the week beginning September 13th.

New, returning and replacing
We welcome back Mr. Jonathan Cassidy after a five year Career Break. During his absence Mr. Cassidy was replaced in the Art department by Mr. Maurice Meade, who is currently working with Sligo and Leitrim VECs.

We welcome Ms. Maureen Gilmartin to Summerhill, where she will be teaching Spanish and French.
We also welcome new Guidance Counsellor Mr. David Mc Neive and Mr Paul Kelly who will be filling in for Pauline Duffy in the R.E. Dept.

Changed Times
Summerhill has moved from an eight period day to a nine period day. In addition the lunch time has been shortened to facilitate an earlier finishing time.
The practice of streaming First Year students has been discontinued and an enhanced pastoral care initiative has been put in place. This is to further assist students as they progress through the college. Central to the new system is a much enhanced tutor system.

Start of Year Mass
The mass to mark the start of the academic year was celebrated in the cathedral on Tuesday September 7 by Rev. Gerard Cryan. Bishop Jones was unable to attend due to a family bereavement.

The college website
The college website is increasingly becoming a major reference point for students and their parents.
The site has been revamped by Mr. Damian Keenan and Mr. Kenny Donagher. It will be constantly updated and will bring all visitors up to date on all aspects of college life, both on and off campus. Later in the year an on-line Year Book will feature on the site. The site can be accessed at www.summerhillcollege.ie

Awards Night
The annual Student Awards night will take place on October 14th.
These awards formally recognise student achievement in a wide variety of areas ranging from academic to sporting, cultural and extra curricula activities.
Mr. Derek Wynne will again be the organiser, aided by a very hard working committee. Guest of honour will be Brigadier General Gerry Hegarty, G.O.C. 4 Western Brigade.

Departing French Assistant
Au Revoir to French assistant Marie Desclosaye who is returning to France after helping out the Language dept.



Get well wishes
Get well wishes go to Albert Wynne, caretaker of the Old Building who is on sick leave at the moment.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Mr. Brian Tivnan on the birth of his first born, a baby boy.

Congratulations also Mr. Shane Reynolds and Ms. Pauline Duffy, both of whom welcomed baby girls into the world.
