Summerhill College - Champion in the Classroom

Bronze Medal at Irish Maths/Science Olympiad
Summerhill student Tanzeel Ahmed became the first ever Summerhill student to win a medal at the Irish Science Olympiad. Tanzeel qualifed for the Junior Olympiad on the basis of his Maths/Science results in the Junior Cert this year.

Two other Summerhill pupils, Ciaran Mc Closkey and Mohammad Rasheed also qualified as a result of their excellent performances.

Out of one hundred and six students who qualified for the national Olynpiad, Tanzeel finished in seventh position. The top six students will feature on the Irish International Olmpiad team and Tanzeel is a reserve on that team which will travel to the World Junior Olympiad to be held in Nigeria.

Irish Science Teachers’ Association Quiz
Trial quizzes are currently being held in Summerhill to select a team for the upcoming regional heats of the Irish Science Teachers’ Association (ISTA) quiz, The quiz is open to students who study any one of the subjects Physics, Chemistry or Biology and who are not Repeat Year students.

Summerhill has a proud record of success in this competition and we hope this year will see at least one Summerhill team qualify for the national finals to be held in Trinity College Dublin in late November.

Fond farewell to departing student.
Third year student Mustafa Ahmad took his leave of Summerhill College last week as he prepared to depart for his new life in Saudi Arabia, where his father is already working as a doctor. Mustafa’s class marked his departure and class tutor Mr. Adrian Barret organised a fitting farewell complete with signed card and photographs. Principal Mr. Tommy Mc Manus also called in on the class and posed for pictures with Mustafa and his class. Recent All Star award winner, Charlie Harrison also joined in the farewells.

Visitors to CSPE class
Pat Mc Carrick from the Third World Charity Bóthar visited Ms. Rosemary Roger’s 3L4 CSPE class recently to raise awareness of the charity’s work in Africa. As well as speaking to the class he showed a very informative DVD. The class is working on the Action Project for CSPE and the visit and subsequent discussion forms part of this project.

Another recent visit to the class was Ms. Sandra Henry from the Sligo branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association. The visit was to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Irish Wheelchair Association,

Co-ordinator and Director
Congratulations to Transition year co-ordinator, Mr. Fintan Whelan on his recent successful performance as director of the Sligo Drama Circle’s production of John B. Keane’s Sive.. The play was staged in the Hawkswell Theatre during the October mid-term. Many Summerhill students attended the performance as the play is being studied by some Fourth Year classes as one of their three texts for the Comparative Studies section for Leaving cert. 2012.

Marathon Man
Well done to our new Guidance Counsellor Mr. David Mc Neive on completing the Dublin City Marathon on the October Bank Holiday. Mr Mc Neive, a native of County Mayo is a very keen sportsman and is a noted surfer and swimmer.

Gaelic Football
The Junior Gaelic football team drew with St. Muredach’s of Ballina in a coonacht league fixture on November 2nd. The final whistle saw the two teams level on two goals and eight points. The game was played in atrocious conditions with the wind and rain militating against good football.

The Second Year Gaelic team won their home game against St. Jarlath’s Tuam. A great workman-like performance from the team saw them emerge victorious on a score line of 1-11 to 2-06.

Charlie Brings All-Star trophy to Summerhill

Sligo’s All Star full back brought his All-Star trophy back to Summerhill for all our Gaelic footballers to see. The award is a great boost to football in the college and hopefully will inspire many.

Later on Charlie’s achievement will be officially marked by his old school.
