The 2010 Awards Night took place on October 14th in Father Flanagan Hall. It was the first occasion on which the event was held in the college.
The Father Flanagan Hall was looking its best on the night thanks to a recent paint job and the great work of the hard working organising committee under the direction of Mr. Derek Wynne.
Guest of honour on this occasion was past pupil, Brigadier general Gerry Hegarty G.O.C 4 Brigade.
In attendance also were Bishop Christy Jones and long term Summerhill benefactor Rev. Michael Devine, who is based in Florida. Principal Tommy Mc Manus acted as Master of Ceremonies assisted by Deputy –principal, Ms. Margaret Dowd and Rev. Gerard Cryan,.
Sporting and cultural organisation in the town provided representatives to present the various awards. Summerhill students were delighted to have in their company, Sligo’s recent GAA All-Star, Charlie Harrison.
The Awards night officially recognises student achievement in a wide variety of areas.
This involves academic and sporting awards as well as extra-curricula awards.
The two major awards are Student of the Year and Sport’s Star of the Year. The Student of the Year award was shared this year because two students, Cian Henry and Feidhlim Mc Gowan scored the maximum 6oo points in the 2010 Leaving Certificate examination.
The top sporting award went to Donal Brady.
The top Junior Cert. award went to Tanzeel Ahmed who also qualified for the Irish maths Olympiad on the basis of his results.
