Connaught 2nd Year 'A' Qtr Final
Summerhill College(Sligo) 7-8
St Muirdechs College (Ballina) 1-2
Summerhill College qualified for the Connaught semi final with a great win against St Muirdechs College, Ballina in Dromard on Tuesday 8th March.
Playing with aid of a very strong wind in the first half, Summerhill knew they had to build a substantial lead before the break and they did that with great scores from Aaron Clerkin, Dillion Kilgannon, and a brace of goals and points from Ciaran Stenson to leave the score at half time 4-4 to 0-1. Summerhill were guilty though of not being clinical enough in finishing scores with many shots going either wide or into the goalies hands.
Summerhill were very lucky to have Conan O Donnell who swopped the No. 3 jersey for the No. 1 as regular goalie Luke Walsh picked up an injury in the warm up and Conan will be hard shifted for the next game having pulled off some great saves during the game.
Summerhill managers Damian Keenan, Kenny Donagher and Charlie Harrison has to change tacticts in the second half as long passes were very difficult to keep acurate with the now gale force wind into their faces but change they did and the play changed to short passes and running into enpty space. The defence
were under a lot of pressure but with the half back line of Cteven Regan,Dara Cumming and Aaron Clerkin playing brilliantly as usual, they absorbed all that Muirdechs could give and broke out to turn defence to attack every chance the could.
It would be hard to pick out a man of the match with great defensive preformances from Brian Mc Gowan Hadi Mousa and Steven Quigley and the work rate of Paul Mc Namara and Dara O Brien in the center of the park. The attack was led by Calrys Aaron Flynn with top scorer Ciaran Stenson and Alex Selby each side of him and pivotal in the full forward line was Dillion Kilgannon who showed for every ball and gave unselfishly to Lorcan Long and Nathan Rooney at every occassion.
Indeed Nathan Rooney scored a goal that would not be out of place in the Showgrounds with a flying karate style volly after a pass fromto leave the Ballina goalie rooted and with a 'whats going on here' look on his face.
Summerhill Colleges 2nd Years now face St. Gerards of Castlebar on Tuesday 22nd March in Curry at 12.30 with ref J. Galvey.
